Jesmond Dolphins is a progression from swimming lessons to competitive swimming. There are five dolphin squads in Newcastle which form part of Newcastle Swimming Development Scheme.
Criteria for joining Jesmond Dolphins
- For children age between 7 - 12
- The normal route into dolphins is through recommendation by the swimming teachers running the lessons. There is a waiting list held at the pools reception which is regularly reviewed
- Children joining dolphins should be able to swim each of the four strokes and have the ability to train for an hour
Aim
To improve stroke technique, be taught to dive and do tumble turns. Those swimmers who show commitment and potential may be selected for promotion to B squad
What it involves
- Attending two sessions per week and eventually a further session called super dolphins
- Attending time trials which are held each month on a Sunday morning at the city pool. This is an important part of dolphins as it enables each child to be assessed and monitored. The time trial results are used to assist team selection for The Junior League and promotion between squads
- Having the opportunity to be selected for the Inter Dolphin galas. There are four each year in March, June, September and December held at the City Pool
